AVID at a Glance
- AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
- AVID is an in-school academic support program for grades 4-12 that prepares students for college eligibility and success.
- AVID places academically average students in advanced classes.
- AVID levels the playing field for minority, rural, low-income and other students without a college-going tradition in their families.
- AVID is for all students, but it targets those in the academic middle.
- AVID is implemented schoolwide and districtwide.
Characteristics of AVID Students
- Identified as having academic leadership and personal potential by parents, teachers, counselors, and students themselves
- Have a desire to attend college
- Have a willingness to prepare for the demanding course requirements of four-year colleges and universities
- Have average to above average academic achievement
AVID Program Requirements
- Maintain enrollment in college preparatory classes
- Maintain a notebook (3-ringed binder provided) with class and text notes
for each academic course
- Maintain assignment sheets for each subject and complete tutorial forms
for all AVID tutorial sessions
- Take at least one page of notes in every class each day
- Spend two hours per night on homework and study
- Maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes
- Complete AVID assignments including writing and speaking tasks
- Participate in AVID tutorials
- Take the PSAT/SAT/ACT at least once
- Attend the AVID field trips during and after school
